Playoff Sub Rules

Effective for the Oct 30, 2010 game and beyond

Starting October 30th, the Fall League will be in Playoffs. If you have not yet seen the format for the League, please do take a look at it here.

Due to the nature of playoffs and in the interest of fair-play, we are instituting Rules for Subs. The rules are as follows:

Your team must have at least 2 original members every game.
Subs cannot be members of another team also in the league.

Failure to follow these rules results in an automatic loss on the schedule.

You must have 3 curlers on a team to make a game. So if you are only 2 members and cannot find a non-league member for a sub, you will be forced to take an automatic loss. There at least 6 non-league curlers who have subbed previously, so it should not be too difficult to find a sub using the Forum.

In the case of an automatic loss, please be sure to still get league curler subs so that the game is still played. Your opponents are still looking to play, so form a team for the game however you can. Upon completion of the game, be sure to mark it as a loss regardless of the score.

If both teams fail to meet the required minimum of at least 2 original team members or cannot form a team of 3 curlers without the use of league curler subs, then both teams would be facing automatic losses. In the case of both teams facing automatic losses, the game should be played with invalid subs (other league curlers). The game is then played without the automatic loss, so the winner is determined based on the score as if the teams were both valid. In this case the rule-violations offset each other.

Curl San Diego Football

You might be wondering “What does football have to do with Curl San Diego?” Since Curling originated in Scotland and football there is what we know of as soccer here, the answer is the World Cup. Curl San Diego has adopted the World Cup’s playdown system to be able to house 16 teams in an 8 week period for our Fall League.

The way it will work is that the first 2 games will be used to establish four Groups of 4 teams. Weeks 3, 4, & 5 will be a round-robin play within each group. The top two teams from each Group after the round-robin will move into a 1st Tier playoff bracket and the bottom two teams will move into a 2nd tier playoff bracket. If you lose in the first round of either playoff bracket, you will be moved to a B-side playoff of the tier you were in.

The 1st and 2nd place of the A-side from each tier will be awarded trophies. The 1st place of the B-side from each tier will be awarded medals.

The great aspects of this are that as of Week 6, all teams still have an equal opportunity to take home an award; and the teams should be of similiar calibre at the start of the playoff brackets. With 6 out of 16 teams recieving awards, there is a pretty good chance of taking home some hardware.

If you haven’t yet signed up for our Fall League starting August 28th, please be sure to do so! If you have a team, great! If you need a team, we can help you find one. There are many curlers and small groups that have signed up so it is easy to find everyone a spot.

Remember: Unknown curlers are just friends you haven’t met yet.

Pickup Curling on July 8th

On Thursday, July 8st, there will be a set of pickup games starting at 6:45 PM and finishing at 8:45. There will be four games played concurrently – a total of 32 spots are available. Teams will be organized at the beginning of the event.

No instruction will be provided at this event – curlers should have at least participated in one of our learn to curl clinics or played in one of our league games. Of course, the more experienced curlers are always happy to provide guidance and pointers (wanted or not).

Cost is $20 per person for the night (the zamboni is scheduled to be off at 6:45, so there will be a bit under 2 hours of playing time) – please register online in advance. To register multiple people, just select a quantity for the number you wish to register and process as a single transaction. If there is someone you want to play with, that will be worked out at the event (teams are not set prior to getting there).

Pickup Curling on July 1st

The weather is always nice in San Diego, so why not go curling in the summertime?

The next pickup curling game will be on Thursday, July 1st, 6:45 to 8:45 PM. The zamboni is supposed to be off the ice by 6:45, so this will be a bit under 2 hours of curling time. Cost is $20 – more details can be found here.

We will also be having pickup games on the following dates:

Pickup Game for Experienced Curlers

We’ve been doing a lot of instructing of players new to the game lately – which is fantastic! – but here’s a chance to just come out and play for an evening. There will be an evening of pickup games on Wednesday, June 23rd – details and registration are here. Players that have participated in a Curl San Diego league are welcome to attend.

Learn to Curl Clinic and Summer League

Where else can you wear a scarf in the middle of summer?

Two new events have been scheduled for the summer. On June 5th at 5:30 we will be holding a learn to curl clinic open to all beginners. Spots are limited to 64 total – online registration is available here:

Late Spring Mini-League

In the mini-league, the instructors won't laugh at you. Promise.

Registration is now open for the upcoming mini-league! This will be a 5-week league starting 4/24 – all games are Saturday at 7:45. This league will have a lot of beginner curlers – we will be providing supervisors at each game to help with instruction, so if you haven’t curled before, this is a great chance to learn.

The league is open to more experienced curlers as well – we will mix experienced curlers with new players to keep the teams balanced. If you are interested in playing but unable to make one or more of the games, please let us know (Alan or Elliot at curl@curlsandiego.org) and we can help line up subs.

More Learn to Curl Clinics and a Second League Scheduled

More learn to curl clinics are coming in April! We have confirmed the following dates and times for learn to curl clinics at the iceoplex in Escondido (Note: start times have been updated!):

Saturday, 4/10 7:45pm-10:15 pm (SOLD OUT)

Saturday, 4/17 5:00 pm- 7:30 pm (SOLD OUT)

Each clinic is open to anyone interested in learning the Olympic sport. The club provides the necessary equipment – all you need is clean, closed-toed shoes and comfortable semi-warm clothing.

The cost for each clinic is $20 per person.

We will also be holding an additional 5-week league starting April 24th. Registration and cost information will be e-mailed out in the next few weeks.

Playoffs – week 2 results

Last week the playoffs reached the semi-finals, where Neff took down the Glauser rink, and the Skinner rink held off team Meyer. The final is set for tonight with Neff and Skinner looking to battle for San Diego curling supremacy! After finishing 5th and 6th respectively in the regular season round robin, these teams have demonstrated the great level of parity in the league. Or the importance of peaking at the right time. Or that the season is too short.

In the skins match, the Clark rink crushed the Hicks rink 4 to 1. Ouch. Well played, Clark rink!
